Agency Notes
At Resolution
Sadly, the news from Resolution is that Resolution is no more. The 18-month-old agency, founded by former ICM head Jeff Berg, is folding. It has been reported that this comes in the wake of news that key investors would not be fulfilling their financial obligations, but agents have been leaving the fledgling agency for months. Now, all Resolution agents will need to find new places of employment.
Among those to recently land elsewhere are Abram Nalibotsky and Pamela Goldman (now at Verve) and Kevin Hussey and Kate Cates (now at ICM Partners). These departures are in addition to Steve Alexander, Shari Smiley, Dennis Kim and Leigh Brillstein, all of whom left well ahead of the announcement to close.
At CAA:
Director Brad Peyton (upcoming San Andreas) has signed with a team that includes Todd Feldman and Craig Gering.

WhoRepresents.com: Notes From the Rep Biz April 3, 2015
Notes From the Rep Biz, April 3, 2015
Agency Notes
This weeks newsletter is devoted to the shocking departure of ten agents, essentially en masse, from CAA, all of them going to UTA.
Heres what you need to know:
On March 31, UTA announced that agents Jason Heyman, Martin Lesak, Greg Cavic, Gregory McKnight and Nick Nuciforo had joined the agency. Deadline broke the story. As a group, these five agents were the heart and soul of CAAs comedy business. The talent in play as a result of this move is staggering, and includes Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Seth Meyers, Danny McBride, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Melissa McCarthy. All five agents were announced as new UTA partners (this is a return for Heyman and Lesak, who were UTA partners a decade ago).
Later that day, it was reported that both Chris Pratt and Will Ferrell would sign with UTA. But the excitement didnt stop there; by the end of the day, three more CAA agents had announced their resignation and intention to go to UTA. These were John Sacks, Susie Fox and Joanna Scott. This meant an even worse hit to CAAs comedy roster, with artists like Broad City creators Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, as well as stand-ups Jerrod Carmichael and Natasha Leggero, now in play.
On April 1 (wouldnt it have been nice for CAA if it was all just a prank?) agents Mackenzie Condon and Chelsea McKinnies left CAA for UTA, bringing the total defections to ten. Condon and McKinnies, like the others before them, work almost exclusively with comic talent. While there are dozens of top-flight actors, writers, directors and comedians up for grabs, at least one more former CAA client confirmed his commitment to UTA on Wednesday: The Office and Hangover star Ed Helms.
On April 2, the first lawsuit related to the defection was filed in L.A. Superior Court. CAA filed suit against Cavic and McKnight specifically, as well as against UTA, alleging, among other things, that the agents and their new agency were part of a conspiracy to intentionally and deliberately interfere with CAAs existing and prospective economic relationships with its clients. Cavic and McKnight were not under formal contract with CAA, which may be what exposed them to this type of legal action; the agents under contract may have clauses dictating that such disputes be handled in arbitration. The entirety of the claim, filed by Proskauer Rose LLP, representing CAA, can be read on Deadline.com.
Many questions remain. Among them:
What further legal action will CAA pursue, and how long will it be before the matter is resolved? With ten agents and a rival agency in its sights, CAAs legal strategy is likely to be complex. The dust may not settle any time soon.
What about commissions? Lets say, hypothetically, that cooler heads prevail here (hey, anythings possible). What would an amicable settlement look like? Generally speaking when an agent leaves one company for another one, a split is made between the two agencies regarding commissions on deals the agent has brokered. But with the dozens of high profile talents in play, and the amount of money they represent, could one deal possibly suit all parties? And how will they handle commissions for lucrative franchises and ongoing TV series that clients may be a part of? In some sense, the pressure will be on UTA to package new deals for these stars that are free and clear of any encumbrances.
Will the talent actually follow? The feeling now is that most of the key talent will sign with UTA, but this is a prime moment for a third party to swoop in and sign someone in the midst of all the chaos.
What will the fallout be at CAA? And at UTA? Obviously, CAA will need to do some damage control, and if theres something larger going on there that prompted these agents to leave, they will need to work very hard to stop the bleeding. Things will not be all roses at UTA, either. Doubtless there will be established UTA agents who will perceive their ten new colleagues as either a threat or an insult, and will start looking for positions elsewhere. The same goes for UTA clients who may now feel like there wont be time for them after this influx of movie stars.
What bridges have been burned? If the legal battle is protracted, how will it affect established packages and working relationships around town? How long will it be before executives know exactly what agent to call for which talent on which project? And will managers be dragged into it as well? Remember, the managers typically have more personal relationships to clients, and work with all agencies, theoretically equally. The question of who knew what when (and sat on it) seems like a legitimate one for CAA to ponder. In short, its an ugly situation.
Stay tuned! We will be updating client lists and sending out new information as we receive it!
This newsletter includes information reported by Deadline Hollywood, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.

Agency Notes
At UTA:
The next several newsletters may be starting with UTAs new signs, as the dust continues to settle from the CAA situation. Heres what we can report this week:
Comedy touring agent Andrew Skikne became the 11th former CAA agent to join UTA within the span of a week.
Between them, newly minted UTA partners Jason Heyman, Greg Cavic and Gregory McKnight now represent (in addition to Will Ferrell, Chris Pratt and Ed Helms): Melissa McCarthy, Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, Zach Galifianakis, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie, Adam Pally, directors James Bobin and Jonathan Krisel, filmmaker and producer Charlie Siskel, and British TV creators Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong.
At WME:
Eli Roth has left CAA and signed with Mike Simpson and Robert Newman. The filmmaker, producer and actor was not repped by any of the agents who fled CAA, so theres no clear connection to draw there.
Spanish director Juanfer Andres, as well as frequent collaborator Esteban Roel, have both signed with Robert Newman.
Comedians Sabrina Jalees and Nephew Tommy have signed with Hillary Robbie and EJ Johnson, respectively.
At ICM Partners:
Personal appearance agent Rob Prinz is the first rep to depart UTA in the wake of the CAA tidal wave. He brings along fellow agent Nikki Wheeler (who is also Prinzs wife), as well as clients that include Jerry Seinfeld and Celine Dion. Prinz joins ICM as a partner.
Game of Thrones actress Carice Van Houten has signed with a team that includes Chuck James and Craig Shapiro.
PR Notes

Agency Notes
At UTA:
Comedian Sarah Silverman, who took a dramatic turn in this years Sundance film I Smile Back, is now represented by Jo Yao. While not technically part of the CAA comedy exodus, Silverman definitely fits the profile of the talent now moving over to UTA.
Among those former CAA clients to have been confirmed at UTA in recent weeks are SNL members Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney, Broad City creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, and stand-up Jim Gaffigan, whose eponymous sitcom is set to premiere this summer. All of the above are repped by John Sacks.
Unrelated to the CAA situation, UTA landed another major name in comedy this past weekprolific TV creator Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory, and many more). He will be represented by Jay Sures. He was previously with ICM Partners.
At WME:
WME also beefed up its TV talent, signing writer/producer Peter Ocko, writer/producer/actor Steve Byrne, and very busy director Fred Savage (yes, that Fred Savage). Ocko is with Matt Solo, Byrne is with Silvio Lund, and Savage will be repped by Richard Weitz.
Young actor Parker Mack has signed with Megan Silverman.
Past Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear is now with Michelle Bohan.
Supermodel Joan Smalls has signed for theatrical representation with Elyse Scherz.
At ICM Partners:
Actress Rebecca Ferguson, who starred in The White Queen for BBC and Starz, and will be seen in the forthcoming installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, is now represented by Carter Cohn.
At CAA:
Actress Kate Beckinsale has signed with Matt DelPiano.
Christopher Wheeldon, theater director/choreographer and current Tony nominee, has signed with Joe Machota.
YouTube star Jenna Marbles is now represented by Paul Cazers.
