The Predator managed to scrounge up $24 million for a first place finish at the box office. And while it took first place, the number comes with a big caveat it was the lowest opening for a live action film to debut in over 4,000 theaters. Its hard to say what exactly caused this if it was the controversy surrounding the film, hurricane Florence, or just franchise burnout. The film received a C+ CinemaScore and probably wont be staying at the top
for too long. WME reps director and co-writer Shane Black, as well as co-writer Fred Dekker, while CAA reps stars Boyd Holbrook and Olivia Munn.
Coming in second with $18 million was The Nun, which is a 66% drop (a franchise worst). The horror flick has now taken in $85 million domestically, and another $33 million internationally.
In third place with $16 million is A Simple Favor, which isnt bad for an R-rated thriller. The film was well received critically and received a B+ CinemaScore, so it should hang around for a couple more weeks. CAA should be happy as they represent director Paul Feig, writer Jessica
Sharzer and star Anna Kendrick. WME will be getting in on the party as they represent co-star Blake Lively.
Coming in fourth place, with $8.8 million, was the other newcomer of the week, true crime drama White Boy Rick. The film received a B CinemaScore (kind of indifferent but not disliked). CAA represents director Yann Demange, and stars Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
Dropping down to fifth place was Crazy Rich Asians with $8.7 million. The romantic comedy has now made $150 million domestically, and $37.9 million internationally. The film has yet to be released in China.
Outside the top five: the Jennifer Garner revenge film Peppermint dropped to sixth place. Giant shark attack movie The Meg dropped to seventh, mystery thriller Searching dropped to eighth. This weeks other newcomer, the faith based Unbroken: Path to Redemption, opened in ninth, and Mission: Impossible Fallout came in tenth place.
Next week: Eli Roth tries his hand at a family film with The House with a Clock in its Walls, Oscar Issac and Olivia Wilde lead an all star cast in the drama Life Itself, and Michael Moores new documentary, Fahrenheit 11/9, comes to screens.
