Box Office Round Up - 01-14-2019

Controversy? What controversy? Kevin Hart shook off all the drama surrounding his brief tenure as Oscars host to take his latest film The Upside to the top of the box office. The movie, a remake of the critically-acclaimed 2011 French film The Intouchables, sees Hart star as an ex-con hired as personal help to a quadriplegic billionare played by Bryan Cranston. This Oscars drama actually isnt the first controversy this remake has had to deal with, as it was supposed to be released last year by The Weinstein Company but got shelved when it went under. A production that began with award season in mind was ultimately dumped into the January dead zone. Its a shame, as both leading men put in excellent performances in whats effectively Harts first dramatic role. Guess its time to take a clue from the movie and try to find the upside. The only other movie debuting in the top ten is the family adventure A Dogs Way Home, another journey into the mind of mans best friend. Bryce Dallas Howard voices Bella, a dog who must travel over 400 miles to return to her owner. Its very reminiscent of the great Homeward Bound series, where Michael J. Fox voiced the lead dog. Unfortunately, if critics are to be believed, those films executed this premise with a much defter touch. Nevertheless, the debut at number three puts it on track to at least turn a profit. Any movies with Edward James Olmos get a thumbs up from us, at least. Elsewhere in the top ten, its a host of familiar faces. Aquaman drops to number two but officially crosses the $1 billion threshold, by far the highest grossing installment in the DC extended universe. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse actually moves up from five to four following its win for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes. You hear that, Star Wars? Phil Lord and Christopher Miller know what theyre doing. Trust them next time. Finally, thriller Escape Room holds on in the top five for another week for a total gross approaching $40 million, an excellent showing for a film with a micro-budget. Horror as a genre continues to go through a resurgence entering 2019. See you next week! 1. The Upside ($19.6 MM) Director: Neil Burger (CAA | Anonymous Content) Writer: Jon Hartmere (CAA) Cast: Kevin Hart (UTA | 3 Arts) Bryan Cranston (UTA) Nicole Kidman (CAA) 2. Box Office Round Up - 01-28-2019 The Shyamalanaissance continues! Two years after Split shocked critics and audiences by actually being good, the sequel from M. Night is a hit at the box office as well. The combined starpower of Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and the unstoppable James McAvoy brought people out to the frigid winter night and then into the theater. Just put McAvoy in every film franchise out there and thank me later. To think, it feels like just yesterday M. Night was putting out completely unwatchable garbage like The Last Airbender and After Earth. Hopefully, his next movies are surprise sequels to The Sixth Sense and Signs. A guy can dream. Elsewhere, the Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston drama The Upside drops to number two, although it does at least turn a profit in the January dead-zone. Who knows what kind of promotion it could have gotten had it not been swept up in the Weinstein drama. Meanwhile, still holding on strong after a month at the marquee is Jason Momoa and James Wans Aquaman. Despite a lukewarm critical reception, the amphibian crusader has powered through to surpass one billion worldwide, easily claiming the top spot all-time for a DC universe film. It should be no surprise, then, that a sequel is already in the works with Wan once again in the directors chair. If it aint broke, dont fix it! Debuting this week is The Kid Who Would Be King, a fantasy adventure film from Joe Cornish that enters at number four. The Attack the Block creators newest flick sees a young child discover King Arthurs legendary sword Excalibur and must use it to save humanity. On the other end of the spectrum, coming in at a measly eight is the star-studded Serenity, a bonkers thriller with Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Critics have savaged it as well, lamenting its overly serious tone and nonsensical plot twists. Guess its not alright, alright, alright, man. See you next week! 1. Glass ($19 MM) Director: M. Night Shyamalan (WME) Writer: M. Night Shyamalan Cast: James McAvoy (UTA) Bruce Willis (CAA) Samuel L. Jackson (ICM Partners | Anonymous Content) 2. Box Office Round Up - 02-04-2019 Flag on the play! The overall gross in theatres was the worst its been on Super Bowl weekend in two decades. Its a real shame - all those moviegoers staying home to watch what turned out to be a miserable game of football. Win some and lose some, I guess. Speaking of losing some, the only film to debut in the top five this week was the action drama Miss Bala, with Gina Rodriguez. A remake of a 2011 Mexican film of the same name, the film follows a young womans attempts to take down the Mexican drug trade from the inside. Unfortunately, audiences and critics alike havent been feeling it. Its going to go down as a bomb for Rodriguez, who has come under fire lately for her repeated public statements that have been perceived as anti-black. Otherwise, both Glass and The Upside held their spots at the top of the charts as they near a month in theatres. Even more impressively, Aquaman and Spider Man still holding on strong to round out the top five as they near two months in theatres. One day, this nation will be sick of superhero movies. That day is not today. Sadly, Joe Cornishs The Kid Who Would Be King drops all the way down to eighth after just a week in theatres. Apparently that kid wont be king of the box office, thats for sure. Next week should thankfully bring the end to the inertia, with the anticipated Lego Movie sequel hitting theatres, as well as the Taraji P. Henson rom-com What Men Want. Cant wait! 1. Glass ($9.5 MM) Director: M. Night Shyamalan (WME) Writer: M. Night Shyamalan Cast: James McAvoy (UTA) Bruce Willis (CAA) Samuel L. Jackson (ICM Partners | Anonymous Content) 2. Box Office Round Up - 02-11-2019 Finally, a new box office champion emerges. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, the fourth film in the ever-expanding Lego movie universe, finally tops Glass and The Upside to officially end the January doldrums. It may not quite match the magic of the original, but its a definite success all the same. Hear that, Disney? When Phil Lord and Chris Miller are attached to a project, let them see their vision through to the end. In second is the Taraji P. Henson-starring What Men Want, a gender-flipped loose remake of the Mel Gibson hit from 2000. Critics have been mixed, but almost any movie is improved by swapping Taraji in for Mel Gibson. Lets get a Lethal Weapon remake made with her and Danny Glover. Coming in third is the Liam Neeson action thriller Cold Pursuit, a remake of the 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance. Its impressive that Neeson is still pumping out legitimate action films as he approaches 70 years old, but the premier of the movie has been overshadowed by his bizarre admission that he once stalked the streets of Belfast looking for a random black guy to murder. Remember people, a film junket is not a private therapy session. Also debuting in a disappointing sixth is the horror thriller The Prodigy, which is unfortunately not about the legendary English music group. That certainly would have been more interesting. Movies debuting in theaters next week include the big budget manga adaptation Alita: Battle Angel as well as the biographical wrestling drama Fighting With My Family. Cant wait! 1. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part ($34.4 MM) Director: Mike Mitchell (UTA) Writers: Phil Lord (UTA), Christopher Miller (Verve) Cast: Chris Pratt (UTA | Rise Management) Elizabeth Banks (UTA | Untitled) Will Arnett (WME | Artists First) 2. At WME: Actor Richard E. Grant has signed with the team of George Freeman, Chris Fioto, and Stephanie Ritz. He has been nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in last years Can You Ever Forgive Me, alongside Melissa McCarthy. Box Office Round Up - 02-18-2019 Crisis averted, people. Well, sort of. After tracking suggested Alita: Battle Angel was on its way to becoming the first major box office bomb of 2019, the high-budget manga adaptation did at least do enough to win the weekend and get on the path to at least breaking even, particularly when international audiences get a crack at it. Rosa Salazar stars in the partially CGI role of Alita, a cyborg in the year 2563 that must navigate the junkyard metropolis of Iron City on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Critics have found it muddled, but at least Mahershala Ali is great as always. Coming in in third is the satirical rom-com Isnt it Romantic, featuring Rebel Wilson in the lead role of a woman who becomes aware that shes trapped in a movie and must escape every film cliche in order to find love. Critics have been mixed, but it does join a very select group of major studio films to feature a plus-size woman in the lead romantic role. Were all about representation here at Who Reps! Slotting in at a disappointing fifth is the dark comedy slasher sequel, Happy Death Day 2U. Just 18 months after the original Happy Death Day was a surprise hit with critics and audiences alike, there was reason to believe the magic could continue for a series thats essentially a hybrid of Groundhog Day and Scream. Apparently not. Next week, the final installment in the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy hits theaters in North America, after already becoming a bonafide hit in Australia. Cant wait! 1. Alita: Battle Angel ($28.2 MM) Director: Robert Rodriguez (WME) Writers: James Cameron (CAA), Laeta Kalogridis (WME) Cast: Rosa Salazar (Paradigm) Christoph Waltz (ICM Partners) Jennifer Connelly (CAA) 2. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part ($34.4 MM) Director: Mike Mitchell (UTA) Writers: Phil Lord (UTA), Christopher Miller (Verve) Cast: Chris Pratt (UTA | Rise Management) Elizabeth Banks (UTA | Untitled) Will Arnett (WME | Artists First) 3. Box Office Round Up - 02-25-2019 So how long does it take to train a dragon, exactly? Thats right, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World hit theaters this weekend and its off to roaring start once again, cruising to number one and dropping Alita down to two. This marks the third installment in the How to Train Your Dragon series, which is nothing if not a box office behemoth. Jay Baruchel returns in the lead role of the dragon rider Hiccup, and this time he must search for the magical hidden world where dragons roam free. Apparently, it takes at least nine years to train a dragon. I guess that makes sense? They are volatile creatures. Maybe were just spoiled by Daenerys. Elsewhere, debuting at fourth is the scrappy upstart Fighting with My Family, which is at least as much of an upstart as a movie produced by Dwayne Johnson that also features a cameo from the megastar can be. As the story goes, The Rock was up late one night in London filming Fast Five and saw a documentary depicting the life and early career of WWE superstar Paige. So he called up the supremely talented Stephen Merchant to write and direct a feature film about her, since hes apparently the only British person he knows besides Jason Statham. The biographical dramedy, also featuring the great Lena Headey, is a hit with critics and audiences alike no surprise with Merchant at the helm. Next week is sadly bereft of major studio releases, with A Madea Family Funeral from Tyler Perry likely the biggest name. Check back in to WhoReps as we review the box office action! 1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World ($55.5 MM) Director: Dean DeBlois (WME) Writer: Dean DeBlois Cast: Jay Baruchel (CAA | Thruline) America Ferrera (CAA) Cate Blanchett (CAA) 2. Box Office Round Up - 03-04-2019 There are a few truly transformative moments in American cinematic history. The final shot at the end of Citizen Kane. The horse head scene in the original Godfather. The Russian roulette in The Deer Hunter. And of course, Tyler Perry in a wig and muumuu. Its moments like that that keep you coming back to theatres, and simply transport you to another, more perfect world. Unfortunately, every great era must come to an end. Perry announced that the newly premiered A Madea Family Funeral would be the final installment in the Madea franchise, after eleven appearances from the bespectacled character. Look, at the end of the day Perry is a guy worth over half a billion dollars, and who owns his own studio with full creative control over his career. Hard to argue with that. Green Book also returns to the top five this week, enjoying the classic Best Picture win bump. Mahershala Ali can do no wrong at this point. His career numbers as a point guard at Saint Marys notwithstanding. Next week sees the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel, hit theatres. Box Office Round Up - 03-11-2019 Ho hum. Another week, another massive box office debut for a Marvel movie. As the chariot races were to ancient Rome, so the Marvel Cinematic Universe is to 21st century America. Its only a matter of time before the faces on Mount Rushmore are replaced by various Avengers. This time around, its Brie Larson starring in Captain Marvel, as an Air Force pilot named Carol Danvers who becomes imbued with massive alien powers. Set in 1995, its essentially the 90s superhero movie Marvel never got to make, replete with pagers, Nirvana, and Blockbuster. Remember, this was at a time when the term superhero film meant Val Kilmer and George Clooney romping around in skin-tight Batman suits complete with nipples. Huge missed opportunity for Marvel to not bring Arnold Schwarzenegger back as Mr. Freeze to spend the whole movie making terrible ice puns. This release was unusually rocky for Marvel Studios however, as hordes of insane online nerds were angry that their beloved Captain Marvel was being played by a woman, or that the woman wasnt scantily clad enough, or something. There was even a call for a wide-scale boycott of the movie, and it got so bad that Rotten Tomatoes was forced to purge thousands of user reviews from obvious trolls. In the end, as with most things on the internet, it wasnt actually real. Audiences turned out in droves once again for another heaping helping of save-the-world action. Have an identity beyond the things you enjoy, people! Next week sees the sci-fi thriller Captive State as well as the prisoner drama The Mustang hit theaters. Check back in to WhoReps as we review all the box office action! 1. Box Office Round Up - 03-25-2019 If you weren't sure about Jordan Peele after Get Out, you certainly can be now. Two years after that film captivated critics and audiences alike en route to multiple Academy Award nominations, he's back with Us, another unique examination of race in America that only he could provide. It's official - Jordan Peele is one of the great mythmakers of this American moment. Not only is Us's $70 million debut the third biggest ever for an R-rated movie, it's also the second largest opening of all time for any live-action film not based on an existing property, behind only Avatar. In a movie environment dominated by sequels, reboots, and 'expanded universes', it's an unbelievable accomplishment for anyone, let alone someone making just their second feature film. It's rare that we get filmmakers capable of consistently reaching such mammoth levels of both critical and commercial success. Christopher Nolan comes to mind, just in terms of recent history. Certainly Quentin Tarantino as well, whose work combining horror and comedy echoes throughout both Get Out and Us. It's time to put Jordan Peele in that class of auteur as well. For decades in Hollywood, the prevailing wisdom has been that majority-black productions simply could not carry the day at the box office, and thus were not worth investing in. Peele and a handful of other extremely talented filmmakers like Black Panther's Ryan Coogler are showing just how wrong that philosophy is. We all have a story to tell. Next week sees yet another superhero adventure hit theaters in Shazam, as well as the Stephen King horror film Pet Sematary. See you then! 1.
