In what shouldnt be a big surprise, Crazy Rich Asians continued to hold the top spot at the box office by raking in $28 million over the holiday weekend. It only dropped about 10% from last weekend, so expect this to stay number one probably until The Predator opens (although thats not a surefire bet). The film has now made $116 million domestically, and just about $20 million internationally, for a grand total of $136 worldwide. The film
still hasnt opened in a couple of key markets overseas just yet.
In second place for the third week in a row is the Jason Statham giant shark adventure, The Meg, with $13 million. The film has made $120 million domestically, and $342 million internationally.
Mission: Impossible Fallout jumped up to third place, taking in $9 million for the holiday weekend. The films worldwide total is now a whopping $647 million. This is thanks in part to the film opening in China this week.
In fourth place was newcomer Operation Finale, taking in $7.8 million. This isnt a terrible debut, but I doubt the film will stay in the top ten for much longer. WME should be happy with this result as they represent director Chris Weitz, writer Matthew Orton and
co-star Melanie Laurent. Stars Ben Kingsley and Oscar Isaac are represented by CAA and UTA, respectively.
Coming in fifth was Searching, which opened wide to $7.6 million. I have a feeling this will have decent word of mouth, and will hang around in the top ten for a couple weeks. CAA should be happy with this, as they represent first time feature director Aneesh Chaganty and co-writer Sev
Ohanian. UTA reps star John Cho, and Gersh reps co-star Debra Messing.
Outside the top five: Disneys Christopher Robin dropped to sixth place; dog domesticating film Alpha stayed in seventh; The Happytime Murders fell to eighth; Spike Lees BlacKkKlansman dropped to ninth; and the Mark Wahlberg military thriller Mile 22 came in tenth.
Next Week: The Conjuring franchise gets another prequel with The Nun; Jennifer Garner becomes a vigilante in Peppermint; and the faith based God Bless the Broken Road also arrives. I suspect Crazy Rich Asians will take the top spot for the third straight week, but well see.
