Weekend Report, October 1, 2012
No one was happier to wake up on October 1 than the folks at Sony Pictures, whose Hotel Transylvania and Looper opened huge, in the former case setting a September record. Looper gets a special prize for opening even better in China (projected $24M), the first American movie ever to do so (the film was a co-production with Chinese company DMG Entertainment, which afforded it some unique screening privileges). If you hear the sound of maniacal laughter and hands being rubbed together in sinister giddiness, that would be the folks at Universal, whose Pitch Perfect had a terrific limited debut prior to wide release on October 5. Not joining the fun so much was 20th, whose Won't Back Down never even got up, finishing in 9th place for the weekend.
